{13 Assassins}

Takashi Miike directs the ultra-violent film 13 Assassins, a remake of Eiichi Kudo’s 1963 black-and-white Japanese film of the same name. The story focuses on a group of unemployed samurai who are enlisted to bring down a sadistic lord and prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a wartorn future.

Look for this film in select theaters April 29th.

{True Legend}

Optimum Releasing recently debuted the official US trailer for kung fu master Yuen Woo-Ping's (responsible for those killer action sequences in The Matrix, Kill Bill) newest martial arts epic True Legend. The film stars Man Cheuk Chiu, Xun Zhou,Michelle Yeoh and David Carradine in his last role.

Look for this film in select theaters March 13th.

Former frontman of indie rock band Elefant, Diego Garcia is set to release his debut album titled Laura on April 5th, via Nacional Records. Note that this is a very different sound from his previous work.

Beautiful Boy is a somber film about a married couple (Michael Sheen and Maria Bello) trying to find some hint of an explanation after finding out that their only son committed a mass shooting at his university before taking his own life.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams is a documentary from Werner Herzog (Encounters at the End of the World, Grizzly Man). The film follows Herzog’s exclusive expedition into the highly guarded Chauvet Cave in France, home of the most ancient and inaccessible pictorial artwork known to have been created by man.

{American: The Bill Hicks Story}

Known as an outlaw comic, Bill Hicks (one of my all time favorite comics) spent his life touring the world performing his act, whilst at the same time trying to deliver a message. He unfortunately succumbed to cancer at the early age of 32, just as his popularity was soaring. This documentary attempts to show us the man behind the message.

The documentary combines live action with an animation technique manipulating 1,000s of photographs to uniquely immerse the audiences in his world, which is re-told from the point-of-view of the people who shared it with him.

Look for this film in select theaters April 8th.

{Federico Aubele}

Argentine singer-songwriter Federico Aubele's new album Berlin 13 finds him awash in acoustic guitar licks, heavy rhythms and dub atmospherics. The album features guest appearances by Jesse Harris, Karina Zeviani, Natalia Clavier, and Mauro Refosco (of Forro in The Dark and Thom Yorke's live band). The album also finds him singing in English. Personally, I think his songs sound better in Spanish, but there are certainly some standouts on here.

{AGF and Craig Armstrong}

Scottish composer Craig Armstrong (most known for scoring Romeo & Juliet) and electronic artist AGF composed and performed original music for a staging the Virginia Woolf masterpiece Orlando. It's mostly soundtrack music and more ambient electronic than anything else. This one is probably only for a select few.

{David Berkeley}

I first came across nomadic singer/songwriter David Berkeley years ago at Hotel Cafe in L.A. and I've been a fan of his ever since. His latest album Some Kind of Cure might not be his strongest album to date, but there are definitely some gems. "George Square", "The Blood and The Wine" are a few of my favs. I've got a link to stream his album in it's entirety below. His sound is often compared to Nick Drake or David Gray.

{Meek's Cutoff}

Here's the synopsis: The year is 1845, the earliest days of the Oregon Trail, and a wagon team of three families has hired the mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a short cut, Meek leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to become lost in the dry rock and sage. Over the coming days, the emigrants must face the scourges of hunger, thirst and their own lack of faith in each other's instincts for survival. When a Native American wanderer crosses their path, the emigrants are torn between their trust in a guide who has proven himself unreliable and a man who has always been seen as the natural enemy.

The film is directed by Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, Old Joy) and stars Michelle Williams.
